Tao Te Ching: Chapter #12

12

Colors blind the eye.
Sounds deafen the ear.
Flavors numb the taste.
Thoughts weaken the mind.
Desires wither the heart.

The Master observes the world
but trusts his inner vision.
He allows things to come and go.
His heart is open as the sky.

Comment
Too much variety (in colours, sounds, flavours, thoughts and desires) doesn't enhance the experience but overloads our senses and our minds. We are less receptive, more scattered, and we lose the ability to appreciate small, simple things. We live with more anxiety, worries, and loss of clarity.
The constant cravings for things mine our inner peace, so we are dissatisfied and frustrated, without the ability to make room for satisfaction and genuine connection.

The Master, in his/her wisdom, doesn't retreat from the world; he/she is in the world, aware, but not of it. He/She practices non-attachment, he/she maintains an inner steady state, calm, balanced, and remains unbothered, recognising the impermanent nature of all things.
A perfect state of peace (and freedom) is like the sky, which could contain bright sunshine, clouds, storms, without being changed by them.
