Tao Te Ching: Chapter #16
16
Empty your mind of all thoughts.
Let your heart be at peace.
Watch the turmoil of beings,
but contemplate their return.
Let your heart be at peace.
Watch the turmoil of beings,
but contemplate their return.
The mind must be cleared to perceive reality as it is. This inner stillness is the foundation for observing the activity of the world and contemplating its return to the source.
Each separate being in the universe
returns to the common source.
Returning to the source is serenity.
Everything that emanates from the Tao and at the Tao must return.
If you don't realize the source,
you stumble in confusion and sorrow.
If we focus on separated things, this leads to suffering. We forget that all things are simply moving along their natural cycle back to unity. And this generates confusion and sorrow.
When you realize where you come from,
you naturally become tolerant,
disinterested, amused,
kindhearted as a grandmother,
dignified as a king.
The inner stillness comes from seeing the unity beneath all apparent differences, with unconditional compassion. Ultimately, the king symbolises the natural authority and mastery derived not from external power, but from inner peace.
Immersed in the wonder of the Tao,
you can deal with whatever life brings you,
and when death comes, you are ready.
Understanding that being part of the great cycle of manifestation and return, there is no attachment to life as a permanent state, and thus, no fear of death. Death is simply the ultimate return to the source. This realisation grants a profound sense of inner security and efficacy in life's challenges.
