Arousal (A) - activation: expectations lead to anxiety, as a physiological response, the central nervous system gets activated, and we experience arousal that’s intended to prepare us for action. However, this anxiety can quickly escalate, transforming from a motivating force to a paralysing fear. This shift occurs when anxiety becomes overwhelming, blocking our ability to act and reducing us to a state of impotence, and the more we have attachment and more we will experience the activation and the physical response.
In this framework, procrastination becomes a temporary escape, a limbo of peace where we shield ourselves from the anticipated suffering of failure. This self-imposed delay is a defence mechanism. By avoiding action, we also avoid the anxiety associated with it.
So our future ability to navigate this natural response depends on our ability to hedge these two sides. The ability not to be attached, letting go, relaxing, and focusing on the moment and not on the future (all of this in future are wonderful ideas for future blog posts), are some of the things that we can practice.
